Just wanted to introduce myself to my fellow bloggers. I am currently leading the efforts of many in development of the National BIM Standard. I am also involved in the development of buildingSMART as I am on a task force with several IAI and NIBS BOD members working out a charter, business plan and funding strategy. Our goal is to accelerate the implementation of building information models and building information modeling. The focus of course is on information and we are lookng way beyond 3D visualization to essentially building a building virtually before physically. Working out as many problems as possible electronically. I am interested in hearing the stage everyone is at in implementing BIM and what we can do to help. I know education is a huge issue both at the university level and continuing education for the practitioner. Let me know what you are thinking about this subject.

We're particularly interested in BIM applications for in-progress and post-completion construction uses, such as off-site monitoring of construction progress via real-time BIMs generated through 3-dimensional data capture (such as terrestrial laser scanning). We're also interested in further development of a BIM archive based on 'as is' or 'existing-conditions' data captured on-site and used for renovation, modification and demolition virtualization.
We're involved in a pilot project to archive very high-resolution BIMs - generated from photogrammetry, laser scanning and even sonar - in a web-enabled data management system. Our system is being developed in the Oil & Gas sector for offshore platforms, but it is a perfect fit for other uses, as well, including more traditional BIM applications. We're looking to work with stakeholders in your industry to explore the technology's applications in all possible areas.
Based on an advanced voxel processing and rendering engine within a web-connected thin-client viewer, the software could be a powerful tool in many AEC environments. By combining a powerful 'spatial' database technology with traditional relational databases, we're capable of adding the 'fourth dimension' of data (intelligence) to almost any volume - from simple CAD models, to sophisticated CAD models of entire plant facilities, to 'point cloud' models containing, literally, billions of points.

Jason, Sounds intriguing. Have you had a chance to view any of the presentations related to the National BIM Standard? If not I will provide you access to some. We are really interested in achieving interoperability throughout the lifecycle so it sounds like we are tracking with your thoughts pretty closely. I too am very interested in real time uses of BIM for facility and infrastructure operations and protection. Deke
