Back In January this year, TechnewsWorld published an article based on research by the Cutter Consortium indicating that trends, new products are being driven by IT innovations - and not the other way round...as traditionally believed.
The article quotes Cutter Consortium senior consultant Helen Pukszta: "Six years ago, did you submit your requirements for an iPod? Of course not. Do you need one now? Millions believe they do."
Contrary to popular understanding that new products are driven by customer demand, the research finds that IT innovations are addressing problems thast were previously ignored, simply because they now are able to address them. And those innovations are giving rise to a new breed of product - created by changes in IT and then revealed to the public to fuel demand. As we gain awareness, listen to the marketing, find ways that the new technology will apply to us, so demand is created.
And as I sit here, writing this article, listening to my iTunes while I simultaneously download a new episode of '24' so I can watch it on the plane this weekend - yes, i realize that I too am a victim of marketing.
