COFES is always a lively discussion! But we want to know what you feel is important in your business, and what decisions you feel need to be made to further your business - be it engineering, architecture, design, development and innovation. Past presentations and discussions have revolved around:
Collaboration
The Business of BIM
The future of 3D
The PLM Vision
Convergence of business and engineering data
Making CAD and CAE software easier to use
And more...

Send your comments now. What is important to you? What needs to be discussed, and perhaps resolved, at COFES 2007?

Architecture related: “The Future of 2D?”

With all the talk about 3D, BIM, etc. what happened to 2D and what are people doing to improve it. Don’t get me wrong 3D/Bim have great advantages in design and visualization stages of design. But ultimately every building is flattened to a 2D world to be built. Even after the building is built the Cities do not keep BIM’s on file they keep 2D drawings. As there is no practical way to convey a 3D or any Building Information Model though the construction phase why is there little talk about improving 2D. Are we, as an industry, so proficient at 2D there is no room for improvement or innovation? I don’t think so but the industry only seems to focus on the glamorous world of 3D/BIM. Just a thought for you to discuss.

We have 14 discussion topic slots. One is set-aside for the user-group community. For the 13 remaining slots I had to choose from over 90 potential topics for COFES 2006. The decision is made two weeks before the start of COFES and then posted on this website. Discussion topic candidates that have strong support in the blogs and forums as we approach COFES are the most likely to be included in the final selection.

Why limit the future of 2D to architecture? Huge numbers of manufacturing designs and documents are still done in 2D.
Other topics that interest me are CAD and Master BoM integration, CAD for electrical wiring, and tolerance spcification for manufacturing. I'd be willing to organize a session on any one of these topics.

As chair of the NIBS Facility Information Council where the National CAD Standard resides we are still very mindful of what is happening to 2D. In fact we are working as we speak on the next version of that standard. David Jordani chairs the effort while I am turing my attention to BIM, but we are also discussing the linkages between the two. There si a BIM team on the NCS project committee because it neds to be addressed. We see a long future for 2D, but we also see it as moving to being a report out of a BIM also. There is space for both, for the forseeable future, at least. Problem is that only about 10% of people can look at a set of 2D drawings and visualize what the final product looks like (thank heavens I am in that group), but the reality is that 2D drawings are not very well related amoung themselves or with other disiplines such as cost and specs. A lot of conflicts and omissions can be eliminated by using BIM...
