I was able to attend part of the meeting hosted by the Adaptive Intelligent Materials and Systems Center at Arizona State University, Nov. 8-9, 2007. See http://aims.asu.edu and click on Events. Although I missed the keynote speakers I was fortunate to catch the presentation by Dr. Steve Arnold, senior research engineer, Materials and Structures Division, NASA Glenn Research Center on multiscale, multifield modeling and simulation. They have demonstrated the ability to model from nano-level to very large strucutue level such that external forces can be propagated inward to the fundamental properties then changes caused can be propagated outward to macro level. This has been especially useful in design of composite fiber-based structures. Also, speaking was Dr. Huan Liu, Associate Professor, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering and School of Computing and Informatics. Dr. Liu's focus was on feature selection and discretization of (very) high dimensional data. Looks like the world of designing machines is morphing into the world of designing machines that design machines.
