  The COFES STEM Initiative

At COFES 2013, we started a new initiative focused on STEM issues. A group of 30+ interested parties has continued the conversation since then, and we've got significant momentum driving towards COFES 2014.

We have set the following three issues as our mandate:

  • Increase the number of individuals pursuing STEM-centric careers
  • Improve the relevancy, value, and accessibility of the education available to those that desire it, both from the perspective of the individual and from the perspective of their future employers
  • Increase STEM literacy in the general public. We want the public to have a better grasp of some key concepts, including
    • Probability
    • Scientific method
    • Relationship between cause and effect in complex systems
    • Feedback loops
This initiative goes well beyond COFES and we have the potential to make a significant impact. Let me know if you'd like to participate. You don't need to be at COFES to be involved in this effort.

Buddy, can you spare a notebook?

At COFES 2013, several notebook computers were donated to disadvantaged students. We plan on doing this again for COFES 2014. Bring your unwanted notebook with you and we will wipe the drive, refresh the system, and donate to kids who need them.

USERS ONLY: 2014 Global User Survey

At COFES, Cyon Research presents findings from its research. Our current USER survey is a detailed look at technology planning, initiatives, and drivers behind change. This will form the basis of some of our presentation. If you ARE a USER of engineering design software (CAD, CAE, BIM, PLM), please consider participating in the survey at:

http://cyonresearch.com/Survey

If you have colleagues from other parts of the world, please consider sharing these links to the survey in other languages:

http://cyonresearch.com/s/Russian
http://cyonresearch.com/s/Chinese
http://cyonresearch.com/s/Spanish
http://cyonresearch.com/s/Portuguese

Qualified users who complete the survey will receive a copy of the $2,000 report when it is published later this summer.

If you are not a USER, please consider sharing these links with your customers.

  NEW: COFES Library and Bibliography

George and Jon aren't the only ones attending COFES who've written great books. And we want to do something about that. We've started two new institutions, one virtual and one physical.

The first is a bibliography of books written by COFES attendees. We've started pulling together a bibliography of the books we know about, but we need your help. Please take a few moments and tell us about the books you've written. A standard bibliography entry (Title, authors, publisher, date, and ISBN#) would be great, but also a brief note about the book, a link to buy the book, and a cover image would be even better.  We'll put the bibliography up on the website and who knows, you may even sell a few more copies.

The second is a new Library at COFES. Bring with you to COFES one copy of books you've written to donate to the COFES Library. We'll set aside a safe place for the books to be reviewed during COFES, and we'll store the books during the year.

If won't be able to join us at COFES, but you've written a book and would like to donate a copy to the COFES Library, send a copy of the book(s):
      Brad Holtz: COFES Library
      c/o The Scottsdale Plaza Resort
      7200 North Scottsdale Road
      Scottsdale AZ 85253

We'll set aside a safe place for the books to be reviewed during COFES, and we'll store the books during the year. Be sure to have the book(s) arrive before April 22.

We're hoping the COFES Library will be a great addition.

Last Call for Roundtable Topics Requests

You may have noticed that the COFES Agenda doesn't have a list of the topics for any of the roundtable discussions. That's because we wait until we've had a chance to talk with all of the COFES participants before the topics get set.

Now's your chance to put your hot issue on the platform for discussions. What key issues do you want on the table for discussion at COFES? Send a short description to brad.holtz@cyonresearch.com so that we may consider your issue for discussion.

For ideas, please take a look at last year's agenda discussion subjects (scroll down to 11 am on Saturday). The final COFES 2014 discussion topics will be posted by April 10.

 The DaS Symposium

The DaS Symposium (Design & Sustainability) is an open conversation of the role of design and software for design in the context of sustainability. We've got a great lineup this year, which has a focus on what customers are looking for from their software that isn't yet being provided.

When planning your travel to COFES, please remember that the DaS Symposium at COFES will once again be held from 8:30am to 3:00pm on Thursday, the first day of COFES.

Tech Soft 3D Annual Customer Meeting

As a toolkit provider, Tech Soft 3D aggregates the needs of hundreds of leading engineering companies, making it an excellent bellwether of the industry at large. Thursday at 1pm.
